Why do we need dogwood fruit?
The fruit of the exotic strawberry dogwood tree in Zelandia, Karori Sanctuary. Although the tree has the potential to become a pest, it is tolerated in the sanctuary as a valuable source of nectar and fruit for the birds that will be needed until the regrowing native forest obtains the maturity, especially as regards large trees, to support the forest's birds with an abundance of native food sources.
Dogwood fruit, growing on a tree yard. These are small fruit, about 1/2 inch or 2 cm long each. Squirrels, at least, enjoy eating them, and so do some birds.
